About Dr. Lawton

Dr. Terry Lawton grew up in the rural northwest corner of New Jersey. Her mom and dad were hard workers...her dad worked for the Coca Cola company and her mom worked in several factories, a clothing store and bank. She was the oldest and has a younger sister and brother. Her grandfather was an elementary school teacher who taught four generations of his own family (his wife, his children, his grandchildren and great grandchildren). Her grandfather took her to his school whenever he could and his influence was lasting. It seemed that she always wanted to be a teacher but really decided to follow a teaching career in the 7th grade. It was never a question about going to college to become a teacher, just what major and what college. She decided to become a physical education teacher because she loved sports. She competed on the Field Hockey, Basketball and Men's Golf team in high school. Dr. Lawton also played the clarinet and was in the high school marching band from 6th grade on. She was the drum major in her senior year. Dr. Lawton learned to play the guitar while serving as a girl scout camp counselor during college.

Dr. Terry Lawton has been teaching since 1969 when she received her BS degree in Physical Education from East Stroudsburg State College in Pennsylvania. She then attended the University of Massachusetts where she received a MS in 1971 and Ph.D in 1976 both in the fields of Sports Medicine where she worked with elite athletes. She has taught in Massachusetts, New York, Texas and California at the University level. Dr. Lawton taught at San Gabriel High School for 16 years before moving to Century and also worked for several years at the Alhambra Adult school as the Monday night counselor. Dr. Lawton went back to school and obtained a Counseling credential and a MA in Educational Administration from California Lutheran University. In addition to her counseling duties here at Century, Dr. Lawton is a adjunct faculty member at Los Angeles Harbor College and Southwest College. This position helps her understand the difficulties students face when trying to complete their education as adults with families and job responsibilities.

Dr. Lawton has also had a variety of experiences outside of education. For several years, she worked as the sales representative for a team uniform manufactor in Los Angeles. She also was the President of a travel agency located in San Gabriel. For 25 years, she was a nationally rated volleyball official who traveled the across the country as a referee. As a scorekeeper, Dr. Lawton has been able to work with our volleyball Olympic teams and has worked in the Los Angeles and Atlanta Olympics. In 2003, she traveled to Ireland to work as a referee in the World Special Olympic Summer Games. She has also been able to visit every state in the Union and China, Mexico, Canada and the Bahama Islands. Dr. Lawton likes to read, garden, bike, hike, kayak and travel in her free time. Her mother lives in Indio and her sister in Florida, and so traveling to visit family is something that she adds to her busy schedule.
